The gift

What was left for me was my brother. Our parents died when we were young. I was 6 years old then and he was 5 years old. Since then, our aunt took care of us. Kenneth was a good brother. Even though I was older than him, he would take care of me and side me on everything I do. I have no one else. He was the sole treasure I have.
Our mom told us that we should stay together, that no matter what, we should stay united. In the early years of our lives, we never had anyone else than each other so we were never separated. However, things changed when we reached our teens. He was stubborn and rebellious as a weed. I, on the other hand was often referred to as a lake, so silent yet so deep. We have big differences and we have had a hard time getting along. We often fight and we would get bruises after that. I didn’t let him rule over me. I hate to think that I would submit to him. But even if we fight and we don’t have the same preferences, we have one thing in common, we can’t bear coldness in our heart.
There was a time that aunt scolded him and he was punished for his mistake. He was sad because he couldn’t join his friends on their outing because he was not allowed to go. He walked outside while it was raining. I saw him get so wet. As much as I would like to help my him, I couldn’t do anything. Aunt was the one who governed us. We must follow what she wanted. After the rain, I cooked soup so that he would eat some and will not feel cold. To worsen his situation, he caught fever and colds with that rain dance. I wrapped him with thick blanket to keep him warm. I slept beside him to make sure that he will be fine. In the middle of that night, he had waken me up. I heard him crying. He said that he missed our parents. He wished that if only they didn’t leave us, maybe we would have a better life. I almost cried that moment but I bid my eyes not to. I should not be weak.
Time came that aunt married her boyfriend. I was 16 years old and my brother was 15. And we were ordered to usher and entertain the guests. I prepared the food and my brother was washing the plates. So visitors came, ate and party. I checked if Kenneth already ate, so I spared food for both of us. I went to the faucet where he was washing dishes and I asked him to leave his work so we could eat. We were eating together then suddenly to our surprise, my aunt came and took the food away. She said that we can’t eat until our work was done. I cried, I told her that she should let my brother eat first before he would go back in washing plates. But Aunts’ heart was harder than stone. We have no choice but to follow her desires. I hated that coldness in my heart, the feeling of anguish, the strands of strife. I know my brother also felt the same way. I couldn’t tell him not to, so I have decided that we should stop this. After the party and the work, we finally ate what had been the leftovers of the event. He cried on my shoulder that night. I felt the pain unbearably so I asked him out for a little stroll.
Around midnight, we stepped out and went to the streets. No vehicle was passing by, it was the usual time people sleeps so we were the only persons outside. I asked him if he could remove his footwear so we could walk on bare-foot. He agreed. I held his hand while we walk, danced under the stars. Then he asked me why, I just said that I believe that I wanted to feel that my feet are colder than my heart. He knew what I meant.
From that day on, whenever we would have a sad day, or we feel like crying, we would ask each other to walk bare-footed on the street.
The last time I did that was four years ago, when we were still together. We were separated with some inevitable circumstances. I know that I should have not left him, but I didn’t have other option. I tried to ask him to come with me, yet he refused.
I have walked alone since then. My feet was iced not because of the winter, rather because of the blizzard in my heart. The streets have never been colder, my nights have never been tranquil, my soul had never known happiness since we part. I have one spark of hope in seeing him again, but that would cost my life.
It would be his birthday n the coming week and I was looking for a perfect present that would remind him about my love for him. I surveyed all the alley where items are displayed and a particular knitted grace caught my heart. I know that he would look good if he wear that. I got home and packed my things, I needed to see him again, at least I must try.
I tried to get out that night so that I could mail my gift first before anything else. He would receive it soon. When I got home to get my belongings so I could ride the last bus to L.A., I saw men inside my pad. They were sent by my employer, and they arrested me for over staying.
Epilogue.
Kenneth received a package. A pair of socks. And a note saying that whenever he would walk again to soothe his cold heart, he would wear it so that his heels won’t be numb. She promised to go home soon so that they could walk together again. But three weeks later, they receive a note that they should fetch her remains at the airport.
